Incipresa, the Packexe SMASH distributor in Spain, is supporting the Spanish National rescue Challenge in Toledo organised by APRAT. Teams taking part in the competition will attend training seminars on the use of the Packexe SMASH emergency glass management system, and Andrew Orchard, CEO of Packexe will give an introductory presentation at the pre-Challenge meeting.

Event details

The teams who take part in events of this kind around the world represent the élite of world technical rescue. Previous national and international champions have done much to integrate the use of Packexe SMASH into standard rescue procedures, recognising the major contribution of effective glass management to the safety and speed of vehicle extrication....

No more cleaning windows!

Calling all plasterers! How long do you regularly spend at the end of a job – internal plastering or external rendering – scraping plaster splashes off windows?
No need to. Packexe Glass & Glazing protection film can be quickly applied to both glass and window-frames before you start. It’s perforated every 4 inches, so you don’t need a cutter of any kind. Just tear it off to leave a neat, square edge.
And when you’ve finished it takes seconds to remove, leaving the windows as clean as when you started. Cleaning time: zero.

Packexe Glass & Glazing covering the window and frame

Packexe Glass & glazing protecting the front door.

After plastering the ceiling, plaster splashes are on the glass & glazing. When the film is removed all plaster is removed.
Excess splashes which would of taken time to clean, are on the film not the window.

Packexe Protection Film allows you to re-plaster walls and ceilings without first removing fitted carpets.

If fitted carpets are taken up for interior renovation or decoration, they never go back down as neatly as before. And removal and re-laying take time and cost money. But Packexe Carpet self-adhesive protection film (look for the red printing on the film) creates a strong, leak-proof protective layer, which prevents plaster splashes from coming into contact with householders’ treasured carpets.

It is quick and easy to lay and sticks securely to carpet edges to prevent leakage. What is more, it provides a safe, slip-resistant surface for plasterers to work on.

Once the work is finished, leave the plaster to dry, then simply peel the film away, working from the edges towards the middle, so that the splashed plaster and any other debris are safely wrapped inside a plastic parcel, revealing a spotless carpet underneath.

The plasterer can move quickly on to his next job without unnecessary clean-up time, and the householder is impressed and pleased with the professionalism of the work....

CLEAR PROTECTION FILMS – SOLUTION OR PROBLEM?

Builders and decorators using clear, unlabelled adhesive films to protect surfaces, floors and windows may be causing themselves more problems than they solve.

In recent years both builders and decorators have recognised the advantages – in both safety and effectiveness – of using self-adhesive plastic films instead of dust-sheets or plastic sheeting to protect working areas from dirt and damage. The material offers a leak-proof, slip-resistant skin which can be quickly removed after use, greatly reducing clean-up time.

However, in response to this demand, a number of supposedly all-purpose self-adhesive films have come on the market, which can create a new set of problems for the user.

When it comes to protection, no two surfaces are exactly the same, and protection films have to reflect these differences. For a film to stick securely to carpet, for example, it needs a fairly strong adhesive to cope with the relatively poor contact between film and surface. A low-tack film will slip in much the same way as a dust sheet, exposing gaps and causing trip hazards.

On the other hand, if a carpet-strength film is applied to a window, after a day or two of sunshine adhesive will transfer to the glass causing a clean-up job probably more difficult than the one the film was there to prevent. Much the same effect – with yet more costly consequences – can happen with expensive, newly-laid wood-block floors.

Any adhesive film will eventually transfer some of its adhesive to the surface it is designed to protect. This process can take days or months, depending on the quality of the film. With clear, unlabelled “all-purpose” film the user has no idea how long he can leave it in place before this happens. And other important factors such as slip-resistance and fire-retardance are equally uncertain when the film is supplied as an anonymous unlabelled roll on the builders’ merchant’s shelf.

To avoid these problems, builders and decorators should look for surface-specific self-adhesive films from reputable branded manufacturers which:

Are clearly printed with the manufacturer’s name
Are clearly printed (and ideally colour-coded as well) with the surface type for which they are designed
Give clear guidance on the maximum length of time they can be used
Have slip-resistance, fire-retardance and other data on the packaging and labelling.

For the merchant, the obvious advantage of stocking a reputable brand of protection film, as opposed to the apparently cheaper unbranded alternative, is the confidence that it will do the job it is designed for without come-backs from the customer. Result: more repeat orders and greater long-term profitability.

There is no doubt that self-adhesive protection film is the future of professional surface protection, and, with the right precautions, it can save hours of costly cleaning up and making good. But apparent up-front savings from cheap unbranded films can cause unwelcome extra expense down the line, not to mention customer dissatisfaction. There is no such thing as an all-purpose protection film....

Jason, a member of our Warehouse Team travelled to France a couple of weeks ago in a Packexe car. During his journey to Rouen, Jason looked in the rear view mirror and saw a Police car with flashing lights. Jason’s mind was going over time (am I speeding? am I on the wrong side of the road?) so he pulled over out of his way. However the Police car did not pass Jason, instead it pulled in behind him. By this point Jason is panicking (is it all the cheap fags and booze I got in the trunk!). The Policeman got out of his car approached Jason and said:

Policeman “PACKEXE”
Jason “YES”
Policeman “PACKEXE SMASH”
Jason “YES”
Policeman “MY BROTHER IS A FIREMAN, HE’S TOLD ME ABOUT SMASH, IT’S FANTASTIC!”
Jason then spent the next 10-15 minutes talking to him about the product and then continued on his way!
Phew he didn’t ask to look in the trunk thought Jason!

Just another day in the life of Packexe SMASH!

The footage presents Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Service using Packexe SMASH during an extrication at a road traffic collision. The footage clearly demonstrates that Packexe SMASH holds glass in place when vehicle doors are removed by hydraulic equipment. The two vehicle doors are placed on the side of the road, clearly showing Packexe SMASH.

It was great to see Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue using Packexe SMASH as they were the UK Fire and Rescue Service that helped us create the product.

6th – 7th July, The Fire Service College, Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire, UK
Attending the Ambulex event provided us a great opportunity to talk to individuals from the UK Ambulance Service. The interest and feedback of Packexe SMASH was fantastic, it was great to hear that some Ambulance Services around the UK have seen the product in action with their local Fire and Rescue Service. We also found it a great opportunity to observe and receive updates of what is happening within this emergency service.
In addition to the actual event, the location was perfect for Packexe SMASH. Being at The Fire Service College in Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire gave us the opportunity to catch up with and talk to Fire Fighters around the world for example Dubai and Holland, who are currently on a course at the College.

Packexe SMASH was for a second time affected by the volcanic ash cloud.
The Packexe team were supposed to be flying from Bristol to Barcelona for the Spanish National Fire & Rescue Challenge which is taking place from the 11th to the 14th May in Tarragona. The event is organised in association with APRAT the professional Spanish association for traffic accidents. There are 20 teams from around Europe participating in the extrication challenge including our very own UK based team from West Midlands.

CEO Andrew Orchard said "We couldn't believe that we got caught in the mayhem for a second time. We were actually on the aeroplane waiting to take off when all the passengers were informed that the flight had been cancelled and we all had to disembark. Yet again the team back in the office had a mad rush to find other means of transport to get us to Barcelona".
Everyone at Packexe had a crazy day, but all was not lost and Packexe SMASH managed to make it to Barcelona, albeit slightly late! The team are now enjoying the Spanish sun.

February has seen us out on the road, visiting fire and rescue services up and down the country.
After discussions with various brigades we have set out to demonstrate the system, giving you some initial training and the chance to try Packexe SMASH first hand. The visits have allowed firefighters to put Packexe SMASH through its paces, showing great enthusiasm to trial it and suggesting ways the product can be used in line with current processes. It is great to receive such feedback and interest.
The visits have been a great success, with 4 fire and rescue services already using Packexe SMASH operationally and many regions in the final stages of evaluation
Please comment below if you were at one of our visits? What are your thoughts on Packexe SMASH?
We would be happy to arrange a visit/training day in your region, if this is something you are interested in please contact us.

The Medic in our team commented that normally when he is in a vehicle he hates the glass breaking part because he gets some glass pieces in his overalls and sometimes no matter how much you cover the casualty you can still get some glass flying around, but with the Packexe on the glass he did not get any and he felt much safer as there was no glass flying around inside the vehicle. "Andrew Pitchford Deputy Controller Training and glass management specialist for the Victoria State Emergency Service, Australia" ...

Packexe SMASH Receives a Red Hot Welcome in Germany.

Packexe SMASH is a time critical glass management product used within the fire & rescue industry for extrication at road traffic collisions. It supports the quick and easy rescue of the passengers as the film reduces the risk of the glass breaking, also allowing fire fighters to remove the glass quickly and in one piece.
Packexe SMASH is going from strength to strength and the most recent show, Interschutz 2010 turned out to be an extremely successful exhibition for them. The fire and rescue exhibition takes place every five years in Germany and this year it had 1350 exhibitors from 46 countries. The show experienced a heat wave with temperatures in Leipzig reaching 34°C in the shade! However, visitors still ventured to the stands and visitor statistics were predicted to total a dramatic 125,000.
Packexe SMASH kick started the show with daily live demonstrations in the outside showground. Fire Fighters from Leipzig used Packexe SMASH during a full extrication exercise, showing Packexe SMASH's performance under several different scenarios including wet conditions.

The demonstrators showed how glass can be left in place during extrication or broken and removed in one piece with the application of Packexe SMASH.
Packexe were pleased to welcome friends from extrication challenges across the world onto the stand alongside new enquiries from throughout Europe, North America, South America, Australasia, Africa the Far East and Asia. Interest in the Packexe SMASH stand not only came from fire fighters and distributors from a across the globe but also television crews interested in the latest innovation. The interview between Retter television and Andrew Orchard, CEO of Packexe, can be seen at www.interschutz.retter.tv.
CEO Andrew Orchard said "The reception in Germany was fantastic, and as we expected the product was very well received. The show is only every five years and the visitors expect to see new innovative products that will enable them to improve the extrication process. At Packexe SMASH we pride ourselves on innovation and producing products that will enable the highest standard of protection with an undisputed and unmatched ease of use and we certainly gave them an innovation that opened their eyes to new forms of glass management. The show proved to be a great success for Packexe SMASH and we have generated a lot of awareness both with potential distributors and end users". Packexe worked with UK Fire Stations for two and half years testing and developing products that will enable them to improve and speed up extrication at road side collisions. Packexe SMASH has since been launched globally through the UK Fire & Rescue Show, FDiC and Interschutz 2010. The company have also sponsored many international Fire & Rescue Challenges to generate awareness of the product and to give the fire fighters the opportunity to have hands on experience with the product in real life scenarios....

Packexe SMASH Sponsor South Wales Regional Challenge

The Packexe SMASH team sponsored the South Wales Regional Challenge that took place on the 8th May 2010. The rain managed to hold off and an enjoyable day was had by all. There was lots of interest in Packexe SMASH and the Hampshire and London teams used the product in the challenge pits as it was ideal for their particular scenarios.
The teams did very well and Bridgend won the South Wales Challenge, successfully getting the casualty out of a very difficult scenario within the 20 minutes challenge time, so well done Bridgend. Hampshire, won the guest team section, they put Packexe to good use after receiving a tricky scenario with a window filled Ford Galaxy.

Packexe team member, Abigail Hart said "It was good to see Packexe SMASH being put to good use. We had a lot of interest on the day and the teams learnt quickly how to apply the film. If used correctly Pacxkexe SMASH can make certain scenarios much safer and the extrication process quicker and easier".
The Packexe SMASH team would like to thank the South Wales Fire and Rescue for their hospitality and lovely food!

For Every Ash Cloud There is a Silver Lining

Packexe risked losing a large amount from the Icelandic volcano ash cloud. Absent members of staff were turning out to be the least of their worries.
Packexe SMASH® is a time critical glass management product that is used within the fire & rescue industry for extrication at road side collisions. It supports the quick and easy rescue of the passengers as the film reduces the risk of the glass breaking and allows the fire fighters to remove the glass in one piece.

It was due to be launched to the American market at the Fire Department Instructors Conference in Indianapolis this week. The Packexe team, were supposed to be flying out to exhibit at the four day conference. However due to the halt on all flights there was the possibility that what should be Packexe SMASH® would actually be an 18sqm empty space at the world's largest fire-fighter training conference and exhibition.
CEO Andrew Orchard said "We had our trusty associate Jeff Coffey in the USA. He is the team captain of the Fort Lewis extrication team that deals with the safe rescue of passengers in road side accidents. He is an ideal man to have as an ambassador for Packexe, but the logistics of setting up the stand on his own was just too much. We risked losing drastically if we were unable to attend the exhibition, not only the money invested in all of the preparations and marketing material, but in the volume of business and awareness we would miss out on by not exhibiting".
However, all was not lost and their stranded staff member Neil Cocks, has flown in to save the day. Neil was stuck in Hawaii after what was supposed to be a two week holiday. With flights still running in the USA Packexe were able to arrange a flight from Hawaii to Indianapolis in plenty of time to prepare for the show, not only rescuing Neil from an expensive extended holiday, but allowing Packexe to continue and exhibit at what is going to be an exciting and successful exhibition.
